the House of Laudanum has been hosting websites for six years, supporting artists & arts organisations in their evolution towards connection .

Currently we host several record labels, a couple of galleries, portfolios by a number of practising artists, a few festivals, a publishing house, web versions of major artworks and a great number of internet only artworks.

If you are thinking of starting up a website of your own, talk to us . We can help you to understand what is involved, and give you an idea of what you need might cost.

Some frequently asked questions // more FAQs

1. How much space do I need ?

A rough guide goes as follows:
Simple 5 page website = 1mB
Graphic rich 50 page site = 10 mB
Audio/video intensive site = 100 mB

2. What's the difference between registration and hosting ? Am I being charged twice to register my domain name ?

Domain name registration is like buying your name for the internet. You register your name and you pay an annual fee to keep that name.

You can then either keep your name parked (innactive) or host it somewhere, which means that it is registered on a server and has live content.

3. Why is Australian domain name registration charged for 2 years of service ? It reflects the way that Australian domain name registrars like to do business.
4. How do I ftp ? We will send you your ftp details, when you register. Then it's up to you to manage your own space.
5. What's the difference between an email account and an email alias ? An email account is a POP account that you check as an individual account - eg. lady@laudanum.net which you check via the laudanum.net server. An alias is an account which points to another account, eg. lady@laudanum.net which is actually forwarded and checked at lady@yahoo.com.
6. How much is technical support for hosting? Technical support for over the telephone is $25/qtr hour. Email to support@laudanum.net is free.
7. Do I need telephone support ?

If you know the answer to the following questions then you probably don't need telephone support. What is a relative link ? What is ftp? Can I post TIFFs on my website?

8. How come I've got 2 (or more) invoices for my domain name from different companies? At least one of these invoices is actually unsolicited advertising from a domain name providor. If you don't want to stick to the original company that we bought your domain name from, then you may incur a domain name transfer fee.
9. What is an isEngine ? the isEngine is a database tool that we've written to support websites with information that needs to be updated regularly. See the isEngine.net site for more details.
10. Can I check my POP account via an internet gateway? The great oracle says "email us at support [at] laudanum [dot] net and you shall know the answer."
