              ¥

. ..... .. at last, after moaning for years
 about the lack of listening at performances
           i 've             ¥
    witnessed its possibility...though i had to go to tokyo to find it..
.           .                                ..                    ..                    .
1 hour of complete quite... and i mean not a word.
.not one                 ::   .   .   :¥¥::    .        :                 ::
   followed by a break and another half hour of full silence.
            a dream in a world where everybody had to talk and no one had time
  to listen..
.we sit for hours in front of a screen but in front of sound we must mak-
          e comment or chat about our day. here the audience came to listen...
. ++ and was happy to give both these artists the respect of their attention
     (no one twisted their arm to pay ¥ 3500)

        >> keith rowe <<  with >>taku sugimoto<<
this¥ wasn't an easy performance to sit through
    so quiet ¥
...sugimoto was first up. his guitar played incredibly sparsely <
...large /  amounts of silence
      between sounds  produced with various tools    ; ;
        and hand techniques, along with the odd spring. sitting
 on the edge of my seat waiting and listening for the next sound
                                  (- morton feldman seems an influence).

     >>>>>>followed by keith rowe who is clearly
           >> being influenced by his contact with both the
 lap.top.ers and the new improv artists...there       ¥
       is more space in this performance than the
      > one witnessed in .. :: .. sydney for what is music?..
.less fiddling...at first his palette seems so much richer
              ¥ than sugimoto's, how could it not, but quickly rowe settles
       ¥¥                                  letting the sounds playout.

after the break they play together
     rowe playing very quietly in tunewith sugimoto
   ¥ this is what improvisation is about and the out come was shear
delight
  the smile on rowe's face confirmation.....
                          ¥¥
